Being the most powerful predator in the forest, lions are known as “king of the jungle”. Via speed and strength, lions can successfully devour its prey with its strong teeth and paws.
However, though lions are known for their greatness and might, these popular creatures have gradually reduced its number over the years. The reason behind the decrease in lion’s population remained unknown until now. Though certain researches and experiments are made to determine the lion’s progressive extinction, various efforts to sustain the animal’s existence are done.
Currently, there are only a few variety of lions recognized. In order to preserve its existence, most lions are kept on parks, lion sanctuaries and other facilities that aids in making their population grow progressively.
Lions are distinguished in different characteristics and way of living. The following are one of the most common features, types and presumptions of lions:
White Lion
Previously, white lions are regarded as pure hallucinations and superstitions. The speculations pertaining to non-existence of white lions was altered since the creatures were discovered 50 years ago. It was then that white lions are deemed as one special class in the lion kingdom known to have white complexions. The known cause of these lions being white was due to pigmentation loss in fur and skin
Lion Manes
Lion Manes have weights ranging from 250 to 600 pounds. The weight of lion manes correspond with their gender and age. Most lion manes can survive for over 20 years in confinement facilities and 14 years in the jungle. Majority of these lions can already hunt at the age of two and grow in maturity after 5 to 6 years.
A fully-grown male lion can be defined via their manes. Healthy lions have darker and denser manes. Lionesses are known to breed with lions with dark and dense manes.
Man Eaters
Recorded events that had witnessed lions eating humans have regarded the creature being a horrible predator of men. Though some events are actually true, there are various possible reasons that drive lions to devour humans.
Lions with impairments and injuries have trouble hunting their usual prey. Since humans are slower and weaker than those animals that lions usually chase and eats, lions opt to eat human as they can be readily seized.
In addition, as lions are regarded as man-eaters, some people hunt lions to ensure their safety and survival. The constant hunt of lions is a probable cause of the decrease in the animal’s population.
The scarce number of the king of the jungle will doom other species’ existence as most of them are interrelated and their natural way of living depends on some customary course. Though predators and preys do exist in the jungle, these innate situations among animals are mere factors for them to coexist. Man alone destroys animals’ coexistence that led to these creature’s scarcity and extinction.
